A Special Day

Today is hubby's birthday. I asked him what present he wants, he say nothing in particular. Since that's the case, I decided to plan something special for him.

We went to
Pontini, an Italian restaurant at Grand Copthorne Hotel. This is the third time we've been there, as we both like the food and service. They had a new chef at the helm and when we tried out his new menu for Valentine's day, we knew we would go back there again.

Starters were prawn salad and minestrone soup. Hubby had lobster fettucine for main course while I had crabmeat risotto with truffle sauce. Sorry, no pics for these as we were too busy eating. but the highlight of the evening was the dessert.

When I made the reservation, I specially requested for the chef to prepare a special dessert for hubby's birthday. As such I had absolutely no idea what the dessert was going to be until it's dessert time. This is what was served to us

I forgot to ask the manager what this cake is. All I can tell you is that this is sooooooo good. A rich chocolate mousse encased in two thin layers of cake and generously covered with cocoa powder. The mousse, though rich, literally melts away in the mouth and does not leave a 'heavy' feeling. As we already had so much food before this, it's quite obvious we couldn't finish the whole cake. So we packed it home and I took a picture of the half(or rather one-quarter) eaten cake. This is how the interior looks like. Can you see how chocolaty it is?

Arr.. we can enjoy this for another two to three days.

Angie,
oh that cake was sooooo good! Will you try to make it yourself someday? Your husband must be very pleased with everything you arranged :)
When I went to Italy as tourist or to visit my husband's family, the pasta was served as the 1st course, we all already stuffed up before the main course. But all food was superb and fresh, how we wish we could suddenly grow an extra stomach!

Ching, it is indeed rich, and sinful of course ;p

Giselle, we both had a pleasant evening, nice food and ambience.
Er..make the cake? It's mousse cake, something I haven't tried yet. But who knows, when the 'mood' strikes, I may venture into making mousse cakes *lol*
We were completely stuffed by the end of the meal, like you said, don't think we have room for the cake if we had the pasta plus main course. Do Italians have an extra stomach - starter, entree pasta, main course, dessert?? ;)

Angie,
I ususally don't care about mousse cake. But this one in addition with two layers of (sponge ?) cakes sound wonderful! Now blame you taking such a good pic to tempt me :P
wish I could see both your fettucine and risotto too... aiyo, what's wrong with me, I just had my dinner?!

Giselle, when I first bite into the cake, I thought it's pure mousse. Then I found two very thin layers of sponge. I suspect they soaked the sponge with syrup plus a hint of liquor as it's very moist. Like you, I'm not a big fan of mousse cakes(too rich), but this one had me 'ohh-ahh-ing' ;p

Fettucine and risotto? Next time, next time when I visit again I'll take some pics of the main courses :)

angie, i can't stop staring at the picture! and you don't wanna know just how much i'm wishing it was right in front of me. as you might now, i just ended my chocolate abstinence and have been savouring chocolates like never before. i tell you, chocolate rocks and that cake there is simply calling out to me!! i might dream of it tonight, or rather, dream of myself eating it. YUM. Pontini's quite expensive, no? how much for 2 pple?

Jadepearl, he's still rooted to earth, not moon, coz too engrossed in the food, heehee..

The Baker, yea, I knew you must be 'gorging' on chocolates ;p, but I truly admire your perseverance. Surprise surprise, we only spent $100 that night, for two soups, one salad, two main courses and that whole cake. I didn't know that my UOB card had one-for-one dining privilege for the main course this two months, otherwise it should be abt $150. But best of all, the cake turned out to be FREE! I didn't know until the bill came and I asked 'Huh? you didn't charge for the cake?', the manager replied 'It's on the house'. We were left speechless!

Angie, sponge with mousse is a great idea. Just like some chilled cheesecakes have to go with sponge, otherwise too jelak!
